Surf Centres in Tioman

Surf Centres in Tioman

Postby musikl » Fri Sep 18, 2009 7:07 pm

Hello to all,
I'm new to this site, but have been surfing for a while(well bodyboard, still learning standing up on a surfboard, lol). Well just wanted to share some information on Tioman Island. There are a couple of surf centres, especially in Juara Village. One is Tioman Cabana (http://traveltiomanisland.wetpaint.com/) and the other is Beach Shck Chalet (http://tiomanbeachshack.com/). Apparently Beach Shack Chalet is the centre for Pahang Surfing Association (yes there's an association, new actually, they got it a few months back). And you can rent all sort type of boards there. So yeah, enjoy.

Is there much suft on that side of Tioman?

I used to stay on Juara Beach quite often when I was living and working in Singapore. Many a happy hour sat at Razib's Happy Cafe eating 'Happy Fried Rice' and watching the world go by. My sister got married in Singapore and she organised the weekend on Juara beach. Rented a big sports boat to take us all from the airport round to Juara beach and had a great weekend drinking and chilling out (cost them a fortune for the drinks to be shipped). Razib took us trawing for tuna and guys from the village went out hunting for mousedeer.
Looking at photos of Juara beach on the net, there seems to be quite a lot of money put into Juara beach. When I was there it was just the old concrete jetty, Razib's and a few other chalets on the beach. Anyway I digress.

I really cant remember there being much surf at all on Juara beach itself. I'm just about to take a new job in KL and one of the first places I intend to visit is Tioman and Juara beach. I would love to spend a weekend or two learning to surf there. I was just expecting to sit in the sun for a weekend and get bitten to death by sand flys. If there is surfing, I'm there! Does somebody provide leasons?

Regards

As it turns out you're no stranger to beach at all :D

The season usually starts in November and ends in March (same as the wind). I don't know about Tioman, but in Cherating you can get rides for up to 1km long, and if you're good enough you can try Kijal. But I admit that the waves aren't as big if compared to say the least, Bali, but it's better than nothing. Last few years the local kids have picked up the sport so the scene is pretty much alive.

Hey guys!

Syamil, I'm stoked to hear you mentioning Juara! Me and my surfing buddies love the place. We were there once in Dec '09 and Once again for the Surf Comp organized by Pahang tourism board. It's magic man.. the rides are pretty short (8-12 secs, at 5-6ft swell) but fast and quite steep. Some of the locals can do some amazing stuff with their boards.

If any of you guys are from KL and wanna do some surfing I organize trips. Maybe can do one together. Been looking for more kakis.
